James Monroe
Children's Museum was conceived as a result of a cancelled field trip to Columbia State
Park. Teachers Ed Gwartney, Susan Miller, and Sandra Carter had arranged a Social Studies
trip to Columbia, a "gold rush" town above Sonora, Ca. to a culminating
experience for their students Social Studies Unit. When their bus plan fell apart, the
teachers decided to construct their own "Digging's" town and "People"
it with their own students! Their classes,as well as 600 other students from the "bus
cancellation". James Monroe Children's Museum and Discovery Center, is
a "gold rush" era museum run by 4th,5th
and 6th graders. The information used has been
"gleaned" by the students from the many diaries of that era.
Currently there are 22 "stations" teaching visitors from
throughout the history of California from the 1840's to the 1850's. Taught by students to
students.... 1300 last year alone!
