My Diablo Project
Diablo is Spanish for devil but this boat is an angel on the water. Lot's of room, great performance, nice lines, and not at all tender, you couldn't ask for more. 15 feet long with a 5 foot beam, another great Phil Bolger design
We are using the diablo with a variety of motors to see how it performs. Here it's running a 1939 Evinrude 33 horsepower Speedifour. It gets up on plane smoothly and quickly. When getting on plane it behaves very well and simply moves to plane without first pointing the nose toward the sky. With smaller motors, it performs like a displacement hull and moves along nicely with a 4 horsepower motor

On the trailer and ready to go, diablo weighs in at 250 pounds. Some extra bracing was added because you can never tell when we might run into a big motor to try. The spray rails were added after a first test run and do make a difference. Without them the spray off the sides rises almost high as the sides of the boat. The rails make for a much dryer ride. The spray rail and rub rail were left natural finish with epoxy encapsulation and a couple coats of varnish. The exterior is painted with white polyurethane paint.
The diablo was designed for long shaft motors so the transom has been modified for standard length motors. The interior is painted with exterior house paint.
The stern seats make an ideal location for storage. Hatches were built and secured using quarter turn latches. There is plenty of room for life vests dock bumpers and lines
The trailer was built using rectangular aluminum tubing. The material came from salvage stock that was originally part of the the crossing arm assemblies at railroad crossings. After they got bent when cars try to go through them, I bought a bunch of it scrap at auction and found enough straight pieces to build my trailer. The axle is a torflex unit and the whole trailer weighs 245 pounds. I drilled holes in the tubes to make sure it wouldn't float.
