Short Range Transportation
(Bike Trailer)
Fuel and energy costs keep increasing.
It's not cost efficient to start up the truck just to go get a few groceries
or a little part from the hardware store so I scrounged around my inventory
(junk pile) and came up with the stuff to build this little trailer. The
wheels came off an old BMX bike I got from a swap meet sometime ago. One
was a front and one was a rear with coaster brake and with a little machining
I was able to increase the bore to accept some bearings that I had that
had a 5/8" bore. The frame is 1" square aluminum tubing and the axle is
a piece of 1" diameter aluminum tube. The hitch is an aluminum plate bolted
to the axle dropout and is connected to the trailer tongue with a small
heim joint (had that too)
The cargo box is a plastic milk crate.
It's one of the unmarked ones, not one of those that says you're going
to go to jail if you use it. The large reflective marker on the back is
a piece of fiberglass railroad crossing arm. You just never know what you're
going to someday use when you collect it.
This was just a short quick project
but it ought to be pretty useful. Maybe if I made another trailer that
was a little bigger, I could haul one of my boats behind a bike????
