It was a good week of blues here in
SLOtown; I saw BB King, as usual he ripped! He will be 73 in Sept.
and still plays his ass off. Another highlight was Mem Shannon
from New Orleans. He played a small club and was truly a funk
monster! I saw him at Jazz Fest this year as well as in Memphis during Handy weekend and he played much better here in a small club. Don't put your Umbrellas away yet. Upcoming shows here
are:
Concert at Club Fred,
So how was it? Full, but not too jam-packed, the
audience was truly enthralled -- and this seven piece band
with two horns got an enthusiastic standing-O.
He lived up to the above expectations, but "the
definition of the blues?" I don't think so.
They did two sets, but by the second half of his last set they had
only played a handful of blues,
and by then I was not alone thinking this was not really
a blues act. But that improved near the end.
The sound mixing in the last half improved (the too-loud bass
was mushing out half of the Bosstalkers), but the volume became
a tad too loud, and it's difficult to enjoy anything when the
eardrums are hurting and distorting the tunes.
With the leads seemingly predetermined by the
soundboard rather than the band, it's no wonder why they may
have had trouble interacting and working as a unit.

Comments:Blues Dance with Willie Chambers (of the Chamber's Brothers), and the Mighty Croon Dogs!
SLO Vet's Hall,Dec.5, Sat.8-12 PM
With a richly-deserved reputation as the Central Coast's premier
dance band, the Mighty Croon Dogs are sure to get tails wagging on the Vets
Hall dance floor. This 5-piece ensemble selects their tunes with
danceability in mind, combining warm harmony singing (that's where the
"Croon" in their name comes from) with talented musicianship (that's the
"Mighty"). And they're always ready to come unleashed! (the "Dogs," of
course).
"Guitar Wizard" Billy Foppiano formed the band five years ago, when
he decided to quit his day-job and earn his living as a musician on the
Central Coast. The Mighty Croon Dogs jumped onto the local music scene,
quickly becoming known for top-notch performances with a focus on fun. The
Dogs are considered the first choice for festival entertainment, and have
entertained the crowds at the Paso Robles Wine Festival, the Basil
Festival, the Atascadero Lakeside Wine Festival, the Morro Bay Harbor
Festival, and many more special events.
The Mighty Croon Dogs are recognized as the most versatile band in
the county, but for this Blues Show they've promised to stick to blues and
R&B. Says Foppiano, "We're really excited to open again for Willie Chambers
and his band, all a bunch of great players who'll keep that dance floor
packed!" The Croon Dogs opened for Willie Chambers and Canned Heat at a
Pozo concert last year.
Other band members are singer/guitarist/percussionist Buffy Sharon
Doran, known for silky-smooth vocals that go straight to the heart;
singer/bassist Geert de Lange, whose driving rhythms add a dynamic edge;
singer/drummer Denny Carvalho, winner of so many drum competition awards
that we've lost count; and saxophonist Scott Wright, whose velvet tones are
always a crowd-pleaser. You can find out more about the band, or hear audio
samples of their recent live performances, on their award-winning website,
funlivemusic.com. Catch a sneak preview of their show at SLO Farmers Market
Thursday, Dec. 2.

I caught a great concert at Club Fred last Sunday!
Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets with Sam Myers.
Da real blues! The best Central Cal has seen in
some time, a great performance.
They have been playing together for over ten years,
and last year both of them were individually nominated
for a Handy Award; Blues Instrumentalist-Guitar for
Funderburgh, and Blues Instrumentalist-Harmonica
for Myers. But for me the highlight was that blues
piano, (I didn't catch his name, does any body know?) Wow!

In Allensworth State Historical Park between Fresno and
Bakersfield. Mr. Hosea Leavy, "Grandaddy Of
The Blues" told me about this one. He thinks about
5,000 people will show up. My impression was, it's
gunna be a killer party, might be the Highway 99 Blues
sound distilled. If anybody knows more, please post it
here or email me.
Allensworth is a partially restored ghost
town with campsites, it's is just west of Earlimart,
but not on 99, it's on 43.
In 1908 a group of blacks led by U.S. Army Col. Allen
Allensworth, a former slave, established a small
farming community there.
For park information call 805-849-3433.
Also see main page, "blues festivals".
From Fresno, take Highway 99
south to Selma, then 43 south, (past Hanford,) to Allensworth.
BTW, for booking info on Hosea Leavy: phone 237-6832.

Central Coast Blues News
Doug, IM new to your site and I'm
impressed. I host a blues program here inSan Luis Obispo/Santa Barbara,
called the Evening Blues, On KCBX fm 90.1 every Sat night 8-10 PM.
It will be good to include some Fresno shows in my calendar as we
are only 2 hours away.
Also this last week was The 5 BlindBoys,
(two), Alvin Youngblood Hart, and Tom Ball&Kenny Sultan at liveoak. (great sets as well!), & finally Little Johnny and the Giants. When it rains it pours here in
little SLO.
July 4 Earl Thomas, his latest stuff smokes! on cd, if you like soul in your blues.
Also Deanna Bogart plays
Mon July 6. Both these shows are at Mothers Tavern on Higuera St.,
here in San Luis Obispo.
I'll see all you Fresno folks at the
Central Coast Blues Campout July 10-12!
3 days, 2 stages of great blues concerts and workshops!
see http://www.fireonthemountain.com/blucoast.html
Come and say hi at the radio
booth. Stay in touch----

Joe Louis Walker & the Bosstalkers Saturday, $16.50 adv./$18
June 27
A W.C. Handy Award winner. Some say when he plays the guitar,
his solos sting and caress, or
softly howl like a hound. His voice flexes from sweet,
to rough-hewn.
It's been said that Walker is the definition of the blues.
But Joe Louis Walker is so GOOD! An unexpected little
pleasure was when he played some Jimmy Reed style
high-end harp.

Joe Louis Walker & the Bosstalkers Saturday, $16.50 adv./$18 June 27
A W.C. Handy Award winner, when he plays the guitar, he forges solos that sting and caress, that
softly howl like a hound. His voice flexes from a sweet, sophisticated plaint to a sad, rough-hewn
moan. As his band, the Bosstalkers, rock behind him, Walker is the epitome of intensity, the
definition of the blues.

Comments:75 year-old blues singer/guitarist
Austin "Tommy Austin" Thomas was killed in an auto crash Monday
while fleeing from two parking lot bandits on B Street. A window of his white Cadillac coupe was shattered by a bullet. It has been ruled a homicide.
Austin Thomas retired after 20 years in the U.S. Army, then worked 17 years for a tire shop on Ventura Ave, and performed in Fresno clubs. He and Harmonica Slim sometimes performed impromptu jam sessions in that parking lot, and also parties and barbecues around the neighborhood.

I saw him in Reno last year, he was great!
In "Blues Brothers 2,000" in the jam session, it was all about one note,
it screamed B.B. KING!!! What an icon. At 70+, he isn't going to be performing forever, you know.
