Leonard was born in Fresno, Fresno County, California on January 15, 1926 to Nicola DeFendis and Annie Barbano. Leonard and Amy M. Swetnam were married in Fresno, Fresno Co., California on November 16, 1957. To this union two children were born:

• Ronald Leonard DeFendis was born in Fresno, Fresno Co., California on January 14, 1963.
• Annette Joleen DeFendis was born in Fresno, Fresno Co., California on September 17, 1964 and died in Fresno, Fresno Co., California on May 27, 1965. She is buried in Belmont Memorial Park in Fresno, California.

Leonard and Amy live fifteen miles south of Fresno and raise turkeys and wine grapes. (As you can see, Amy also spends some of her time on genealogy!! Leonard spends his free time on the golf course!)
