James Wilkerson Cox was born July 2, 1816 to James Cox and Sarah Collins Cox. On October 9, 1845 he married Caroline Amelia Hood. To this union eight children were born:

• Ann Eliza Cox born August 6, 1846.
• James Knox Polk Cox born November 24, 1847 and died December 24, 1932.
• Mary Caroline Cox born September 16, 1849 and died September 1, 1865.
• Robert Lafayette Cox born January 10, 1851 and died March 12, 1917.
• Sarah Pierce Cox born March 4, 1853.
• Nannie Catherine Cox born September 10, 1854 and died September 1936.
• Rufus Gale Cox born November 1, 1856 and died October 2, 1879.
• Emmonds Douglas Cox born February 20, 1859.

James Wilkerson Cox died October 2, 1892.
