- When using IRC (Internet Relay Chat), people typically pick an "IRC Nickame" that is used when chatting with others. This creates an Anonymous atmosphere for users commmunicating via this medium. IRC nicknames are often humorous or creative in nature. In the box labeled "Nickname" type in your first preference for an IRC nickname.
- Choose an alternative for the primary Nickname that you picked and input it in the box labeled "Alternative". You will be automatically assigned this nickname in the event that your primary nickname is already in use by someone who started their IRC session before you.
- Click the "OK" button.

The following step corresponds to the above image.
- When connected to an IRC server, you typically chat in a "channel",
which is essentially a virtual chatroom where users can
gather to chat about a particular topic. A channel name always begins
with a # sign. After you've connected successfully to an IRC server,
a list of channels appears by default, and you can select any channel
you want and join it. Also, you're free to type in the name of any channel
that you may have heard of elsewhere and join it. If you're the first person
in a channel, you have full control over the operation of that channel.
